Major Cartoon Network show gets new spin-off
The animated spinoffs of Cartoon Network and other divisions of WarnerMedia are booming as streaming services continue to expand. HBO Max single-handedly has commissioned new seasons, spinoffs, and covers of several CN shows, and that streak continues with the streamer’s latest announcement. Adventure time, Cartoon Network’s hugely successful show that ran from 2010 to 2018, receives another spinoff. Under the provisional title Adventure time: Fionna and cake, the show will follow the genre shots exchanged on the protagonists Jake and Finn that the Ice King has concocted.
Fionna and Cake have been featured in several Adventure time episodes, offering a new interpretation of the world of the series. The adventurer and her feline sidekick will also team up with Simon Petrikov, the former Ice King, in the new show, which will take place in the Land of Ooo. No voice casting has been announced. In the original show, Madeleine Martin voiced Fionna, Roz Ryan voiced Cake, and Tom Kenny voiced Simon.
The HBO Max show will run for 10 episodes and see the trio “embark on a multiverse adventure and a journey of self-discovery”. However, it won’t be all joyous, being like “a powerful new antagonist determined to hunt them down and erase them from existence, lurks in the shadows.”
Adam Muto is the showrunner and executive producer of the project. Muto started working on Adventure time in Season 3, eventually becoming a showrunner in Season 5. He also serves as the showrunner for the previous HBO spin-off Max, Adventure time: Distant lands. Adventure time creator Pendleton Ward does not appear to be part of this new production.
HBO Max hasn’t announced a premiere date for Adventure time: Fionna and cake with the revealing press release. However, the brass at HBO Max and Cartoon Network Studios seem excited to expand the world of the original show.
“Adventure time really broke the mold and won legions of passionate fans in the process, “said Billy Wee, who is HBO Max’s senior vice president, original comedy and animation.” We are delighted to partner with our friends at Cartoon Network. Studios to continue to innovate and expand the Adventure time the universe with this world-class team. “
Sam Register, President of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios, added: “Tim AdventureWe’ve broken boundaries and illustrated how impactful animated storytelling can be. We are delighted to partner with HBO Max to continue this tradition to new heights, lands and magical worlds. “
