Korean webtoon operators launch services in France

SEOUL, June 13 (Yonhap) — South Korean online webtoon service providers have launched their European operations in France as a test bed to target the European content market, industry data revealed Monday. .

Naver Webtoon, an online digital comics platform run by Korea’s leading portal operator Naver, announced plans in March to establish its European unit, Webtoon EU, in France in the first half of the year.

The company had launched its service in French in 2019, as well as in Spanish the same year and in German in 2022.

Kakao Entertainment, a subsidiary of Korean internet and entertainment giant Kakao, has entered the French online comics market via Kakao Piccoma, its Japan-based webtoon subscription service.

She created the European unit of Piccoma Europe in France in September last year and officially launched the French service in March.

NHN, a Korean online game developer and entertainment company, launched its English-language online cartoon service, Pocket Comics, in France in January.

Insiders said Korean webtoon publishers have chosen France because the country serves as a foothold for global companies trying to tap into Europe’s digital content market thanks to its rapidly growing demand.

Moreover, it is easier for Korean companies to start their European service in France because French people are very interested in Korean culture, such as K-pop and Korean TV series.

“The French are ready to buy albums, books and DVDs that they really like,” an NHN official said. “If they like webtoons, they don’t hesitate to pay.”
