Illinois Police Seek 2 in Murder of Cop, Injuring 2nd | News from USA®
BRADLEY, Ill. (AP) – Authorities on Thursday were looking for two people suspected of being involved in the gunshot death of one police officer and the injuries of another at a hotel in northern Illinois.
The two Bradley cops were gunned down Wednesday night as they spoke to people in a room at a Comfort Inn along a highway in Kankakee County, the county sheriff’s office said.
The officers were taken to nearby hospitals, where one died and the other was in critical condition and undergoing surgery, said the Bradley Police Department, which did not release the names of the officers. .
An arrest warrant has been issued for Darius D. Sullivan, 25, and the sheriff’s office posted a request for public assistance to locate him on Facebook, saying he should be considered armed and dangerous.
The police department said in its press release that it was also looking for what it described as a person of interest suspected of having been involved, although it did not disclose any information that could identify this person. .
Officers were at the hotel to investigate a report of dogs barking in an unattended vehicle in the parking lot, the sheriff’s office said. They found the room where the eventual owner of the vehicle was staying and were shot while talking to people in that room, he said.
Mike Watson, the mayor of Bradley, a village of about 16,000 residents about 50 miles south of Chicago, said the injured officer was transferred to a Chicago-area hospital, reported the (Kankakee) Daily Journal.
The body of the slain officer was transported early Thursday in a police motorcade from Riverside Medical Center to the Kankakee County Mortuary, and authorities then lowered the flag to Bradley Village Hall at half mast.
“This is a very sad and tragic day for the family of the village of Bradley. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family members of all involved,” Watson said.
A reward of $ 10,000 was offered for information leading to Sullivan’s arrest, WLS-TV reported.
The shooting at the hotel came hours after a sheriff’s deputy was shot while answering a call for assistance from a motorist on a freeway near Mill Shoals, which is in the southeast from Illinois and approximately 200 miles (322 kilometers) south of Bradley.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said MP Sean Riley answered the call around 5 a.m. on Wednesday. He was found dead by a second officer who later arrived at the scene, and the deputy’s patrol car was later found abandoned on I-64, police said. Authorities arrested a Kentucky man on suspicion of the attack and a carjacking in Missouri.
