San Francisco: hundreds of people mobilize against anti-Asian American violence
Pushed into action by recent attacks in Atlanta and the Bay Area, hundreds of protesters gathered in San Francisco on Friday to rally against violence targeting Asian Americans.
The crowd marched from Union Square to the Embarcadero, shouting “Arise, rise up” and “The united people will never be defeated”, while waving signs demanding “Stop Asian hatred”. The event kicked off a weekend of planned rallies across the Bay Area in response to what many say has turned into a disturbing wave.
Boulder firing suspect’s gun would have been illegal under the now-void assault weapons ban
A gun used by a man suspected of shooting and killing 10 people on Monday at a grocery store in Boulder, Colo. Was allegedly illegal under the city’s recently blocked assault weapons ban by a judge, although no one was ever cited under the ban while active, the Denver Post reported.
The suspect purchased a Ruger AR-556 pistol on March 16, six days before the massacre, according to his arrest affidavit. The Ruger AR-556 pistol is not technically a rifle, although there are many features in its design that echo the configuration of a rifle.
A pistol like the Ruger AR-556 pistol was banned in Boulder until March 12, when a Boulder County District Court judge ruled that the city’s ban on assault weapons and magazines d ‘a capacity of more than 10 rounds was illegal. The city’s definition of prohibited assault weapons included semi-automatic pistols that could accept a magazine outside of the pistol grip.
Biden enlists VP Harris to lead border response
President Joe Biden has called on Vice President Kamala Harris to lead White House efforts to address the migration challenge on the southern border of the United States, the Associated Press reported.
Biden made the announcement on Wednesday as he and Harris met at the White House with Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandra Mayorkas and other immigration advisers to discuss the increase in the number of young migrants arriving at the border since Biden took office.
With the move, Biden hopes to show Americans that he takes the border situation seriously after being criticized by Republicans as the flow of migrants has increased since taking office in January.
But the high-profile mission of Harris, who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 and is expected to run for the White House again in the future, could be politically burdensome.
